The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
