Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
