Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these medications must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
