Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
