Congress Approves Legislation to Disclose Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will force the release of case documents related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The administration relented after an extended period of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer declared in a floor speech on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Let the truth come out. Ensure full disclosure.”

Future Action

This legislation next heads to the president for his approval. Trump indicated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Though Trump has for months rejected the uproar over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the past few days, and said he would approve it if it comes to him.

Reaction

Democrats, along with those affected and their representatives who were watching from a public section, cheered after the bill was approved. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would disclose personal information of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
